Regretfully during January, together with many other local schools, we had to close due to adverse weather conditions

Winterslow does well!
The latest league labels show how well the children at Winterslow school did in
2008. Winterslow school scores ranked it 43rd out of 164 schools based on
percentage total. The contextual Value Added score was 101.5 which placed us
overall 6th in Wiltshire. This score is based on progress made from Key
Stage 1 to formal assessment at the end of Key Stage 2, our figures in
Winterslow included 6 children who joined the school during the key stage 2.
Sunflower Success
During our curriculum enrichment
times in Key Stage 1, the children have enjoyed growing sunflowers. The
children all took seeds home and carefully tended and nurtured them with two of
our children who successfully grew theirs taller than others with heights up to
151cm for Holly and Owen. We also have a lovely display of plants at the front
of the school thanks to the children well supported by Mrs Robinson, Mrs Waters,
Mrs Fealy, Mrs Lawes and Mrs Walker. The children also took part in a
local competition to design a garden. Out of approximately 300 entries
Emily came 10th - well done! The designs were displayed in the Cross Keys centre
in Salisbury.

Notice board
As part of our ongoing commitment to try to improve
communications from school we are hoping to link all items of interest and
further letters that may may be sent home onto a notice board on this site.
Please be aware that whilst we try to include as much information as we can
there may be occasions when things get missed. Please do not hesitate to
contact us if you feel there is something of relevance that should be posted
onto the notice board.

Update on building works
Our programme of building works
continues to move ever forward. The staff are delighted with their
lovely new kitchen! The D&T room has had the old metal cased window replaced
with a new UPVC double glazed unit and the corridor from the small playground
has been transformed into a cloakroom. All of the old classroom sinks have
been replaced with new modern units together with hot & cold running water.
All of the roofing has been checked and repaired which means that we stay dry
indoors even when it rains! We have currently undergone re-decoration to
give the school a a lovely fresh feel and also be replaced carpets.
We have a new dedicated room for small groups of children to work with
support. The 50 year old metal windows in the hall and reception classroom have
been replaced. The new playground adventure play trail has proved a huge success
and the children are really enjoying it.
We are constantly striving to
improve the fabric of the school and are now looking toward replacing the metal
casement windows in the Key Stage one area of the school and have also had
visits by professional advisors to enable us to put in place a programme of
improvements over the future years.
Polar Bear Pledge
During term 3 we are undertook a whole school topic related
to Global Warming. We all (children & staff!) have made pledges to save Polar
Bears from extinction. The children are learning about both the Arctic and
Antarctic Regions and how our actions influence the rising sea levels and the
habitats of animals, especially Polar Bears. The children have embraced topics
which will help to reduce the effects of Global warming and have been fully
supported from their families. This whole school focus has united the school and
enabled siblings to share a common theme. The whole school enjoyed a collective
worship at the end of the term where each class shared the work they had been
doing. Have a look at our class links to see what we have been up to.
A Big Thank You to 'The Friends'
We are all very grateful to the Friends of the School for their fund raising
efforts which have enabled us to provide valuable resources for our pupils which
we could not possibly afford from the school budget. They have provided us
with new computers which are now being used by children throughout the school.
We are extremely fortunate in having such a dedicated and committed 'Friends'
group. The Friends supported
us in our quest to further enhance our learning environment by providing a
substantial donation towards the refurbishment of our new library area. The
Friends have recently enabled the school to improve the children's play
facilities by donating the funding for the equipment in the new play trail area.
Please see separate page for Friends activities.
Supporting Charities
Since September 2006 our pupils and staff have supported the following charities: Barnardos, Unicef, Red Nose, NSPCC, Roald Dahl Foundation, Samaritans Purse and
Children in Need. In doing so we have managed to raise the staggering
total of £2,247.89. This is a great achievement which we are very
proud of.
The children in Chaffinch class held a charity day for water aid
in which they raised £264, look at the class link for details.
