What is it that makes our school
We acknowledge and celebrate that every child in our school has special qualities (powers).
Our gems help us to learn about how we learn (Metacognition).
Each power is so special we name them after a precious sparkly gem.
Children can earn gems for their class when they sparkle in school.
Using our powers as we 'explore' and 'discover' helps us to sparkle and be our best.
DIAMOND POWER- self-reliance, independence and resourcefulness
If we practice lots and do the same thing again and again it then becomes a habit; something we do without even thinking about it. To have true Diamond Power we need to use our resourceful skills to develop strategies to support our independence.
Diamond power looks different as we get older. For our younger children it is carrying their own belongings or putting on their coat independently. For our older children it is being responsible for their homework and personal organisation.
RUBY POWER- kindness, tolerance and respect
Somebody with Ruby Power is being aware of others and how what you do or say might make them feel. Ruby power links to our values of passion, trust and responsibility. When we are kind and helpful to others we make oxytocin (feel good hormones) and when we smile, laugh and relax we make serotonin. Developing our Ruby Power makes us, and others feel positive and valued.
SAPPHIRE POWER- concentration, resist the 'monster distraction'
Sapphire Power requires us to increase and maintain focus in different situations. It helps use to stay in control when there are distractions around us. By developing our Sapphire Power we are also developing our concentration skills so we can focus better and learn more.
EMERALD POWER- courage, risk, resilience and perseverance
Emerald Power is a true superpower. It is our ability to bounce back from mistakes and disappointment, and use our words to express our feelings. People with Emerald Power show a great ability for persevering even when things are tricky.
When you are challenged and you feel butterflies in your tummy, it’s the Emerald Power (adrenalin and cortisol) that make you feel like that. By developing our Emerald Power, we can develop strategies to harness these feelings and use them as a superpower!
TOPAZ POWER- collaboration and turn-taking
Topaz Power is another power which will grow and develop as we get older. When we are younger, it helps us to develop our turn taking skills and our ability to share and wait patiently for others. As we get older, it helps us to develop strategies to manage conflict, negotiate larger group dynamics and even work with others in scenarios such as public speaking or debating without feeling overwhelmed.
MOONSTONE POWER- creativity, imagination, originality, uniqueness
Moonstone Power is a unique power for our school. It celebrates uniqueness and difference. Moonstone Power is an important power which encourages us to 'think outside the box', challenge ideas and advocate for injustice.
