Service Pupil Premium (SPP) Eligibility

Your child may qualify for SPP funding if they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. One parent is currently serving in the regular armed forces, including full-time reserve commitments.
  2. One parent died while serving in the armed forces, and the child receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme.
  3. The child has been registered as a 'service child' in the January school census at any point since 2016.

If your child is eligible, please inform the school office or email us at admin@winterslow.wilts.sch.uk
Mrs Kirsten Groth, our Inclusion Manager, is the designated staff member for supporting service families.

What could the Service Pupil Premium be used for?

In order to support the pastoral needs of service children, schools have flexibility over how they use the SPP, as they are best placed to understand and respond to the specific needs of those pupils for whom the funding has been allocated. The funding could be spent on providing a variety of means of support including counselling provision, or nurture groups.

Schools might also consider how to improve the level of and means of communication between the child and their deployed parents. Some schools have helped children to develop scrapbooks and diaries that they can show their parents on their return, highlighting their achievements and day to day school life. In addition, staff hours may be required to support the needs of service children when they join a new school as a result of a posting or when a parent is deployed and these hours could be funded by the Service Pupil Premium.

For 2024-25 our school has 11 pupils eligible for the Service Premium. With each pupil receiving £340 this gives £3,740 in total.

How do we use the Service Premium?

Forces Club

We meet with our service children on a fortnightly basis at lunchtime and play games. The older children also prepare an assembly on Forces Day which they present to the school.

ELSA sessions

For children who need additional support, we use the Service Premium to fund ELSA sessions with the children. These sessions provide an opportunity to talk and explore and identify how they are feeling.

Little Troopers
Little Troopers is a registered charity dedicated to supporting children with parents serving in the British Armed Forces, whether regular or reserve. The charity offers essential resources, initiatives, and events designed to help children navigate and cope with the challenges of repeated separation periods. At Winterslow Primary School, we participate in yearly events organised by Little Troopers.
