Oracy
Oracy at Winterslow CE Primary School
At Winterslow, we believe every child should have the confidence and skills to communicate effectively. Oracy is embedded throughout our curriculum, helping pupils develop vocabulary, express their ideas clearly and listen respectfully to others. Through our whole-school oracy framework and evidence-informed approaches, children learn how to speak with confidence and purpose.
Our Approach
We have introduced a whole-school oracy framework to ensure that speaking and listening skills develop progressively from Reception to Year 6. Staff use evidence-informed strategies, including the Wiltshire Cracking Communication Programme, to promote high-quality classroom talk, language development and participation for all learners.
Examples of our oracy provision include:
- Structured classroom discussions
- Partner and group talk
- Vocabulary-rich learning environments
- Presentation and performance opportunities
- Drama, role play and storytelling

Daily "Snack and Chat" sessions to support communication and social interaction
- Explicit teaching of speaking and listening skills across the curriculum
Oracy Beyond the Classroom
We provide a range of meaningful opportunities for pupils to develop their speaking and listening skills, including:
- Poetry performances
- Nativity and school productions
- Readings in church services and collective worship
- Presentations and assemblies
- Sharing learning with parents and the wider community

Through our focus on oracy, children become increasingly confident and engaged learners. Strong communication skills support achievement across the curriculum, improve wellbeing and help pupils build positive relationships with others.
