Intent
At Winterslow, we believe that Design and Technology as vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum and recognise its importance in preparing our children for our rapidly changing world. Being 'creative.' is one of the big ideas in our curriculum. As engineers, they are able to engage in a broad range of opportunities to develop and extend their design and problem solving skills. It is our aim that through these learning opportunities and experiences, and the subsequent skills that they develop, children will have the confidence to aspire to be anything that they want to be. We want every child to view engineering as relevant to the real world and to understand the creative nature of solving problems and the steps it takes to find solutions that work. They learn that the design process involves a process of researching, designing, making and evaluating and that it is an iterative process in which the first attempt may not be successful but improvements can always be made.
Our Engineering curriculum at Winterslow is based on the National Curriculum and linked, where possible and appropriate, to class topics to ensure a well-structured approach. Areas covered include Food Technology, Textiles and Mechanisms. The children also learn about famous designers and engineers, both from the past and contemporary, to help them understand the breadth of skills and careers linked to this subject.
