Pupil Premium Statement 

 

At Winterslow Primary School, we provide a school culture where all staff are committed to ensuring all barriers to potential are removed and that every child has opportunity to experience success. Our intention is to ensure that all of our pupils flourish, both academically and emotionally, and that all learners have high aspirations for the futures that lie ahead when they leave Winterslow Primary. 

 

What is Pupil Premium?   

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is additional funding from the Government to help children who are socially disadvantaged to achieve their very best in school. Evidence shows that socially disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils. 

The pupil premium is not based on ability. Research shows that the most academically able pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are most at risk of under-performing. Schools should focus on these pupils just as much as pupils with low results. 

The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools on the basis of the number of pupils who: 

  • Have been looked after continuously for more than six months (CLA) 
  • Have been adopted from care (AFC) 
  • Are currently eligible for free school meals (FSM) or have had FSM at any point over the last six years (known as ‘FSM6’) 
  • Are children of Services personnel 

 

We use the Pupil Premium Grant in various ways to support the learning and wellbeing of our pupils and to provide additional opportunities who are socially disadvantaged.  

 

Who is eligible for pupil premium funding?  

Your child/ren is eligible if you receive any of the following benefits: 

  • Universal credit (provided you have a net income of £7400 or less) 
  • Income support 
  • Income-based jobseekers’ allowance 
  • Income-related employment and support allowance 
  • Support under Part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 
  • The guaranteed element of state pension credit 
  • Child tax credit, provided that you are not also entitled to working tax credit and have an annual gross income of £16,190 or less 
     

Key Principles 

All staff at Winterslow Primary School accept responsibility for narrowing the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers.  

We ensure that a rigorous and diagnostic approach is made to identifying the needs of our children in vulnerable groups. Provision is regularly monitored and adapted where necessary to ensure the best possible support is received.  

We recognise that the wellbeing of our pupils is essential for them to thrive, sparkle and grow.  

Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time. 

 

Identification, implementation and development of provision 

The Pupil Premium funding we receive from the Government allows us to break down these barriers for children, enabling them to have the same chance in life as everybody else. Barriers that include low confidence and self-esteem, difficulty in speaking and listening, difficulty in reading, writing, maths, financial difficulties, poor mental health or poor relationships with their peers. In order to break down these barriers, we listen to our children as individuals and personalise their learning through effective use of Pupil Premium funding. 

Academic intervention in addition to social, emotional and behavioural support are implemented through termly Pupil Progress Meetings. Analysis of tracking and progress is used as a vehicle to identify concerns and presenting issues and also as a measure of impact during the review process. 

 

The range of provision for this group could include: 

  • Support for the provision made in the classroom 
  • Targeted interventions delivered by trained teaching assistants or teachers that meet the pupils individual needs 
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities, such as one to one or small group tutoring with an experienced teacher from our school 
  • Ensuring pupils have a wide range of opportunities to access the wider curriculum, for example, residential trips, clubs and sporting events 
  • Pastoral support, for example, ELSA sessions, art therapy or sand therapy
