PE, sport and physical activity are all hugely important and championed here at Winterslow.  We are very proud of our sporting achievements and our bespoke PE curriculum. Each year, we take part in many sporting fixtures as well as having qualified instructors visiting the school in addition to organising 'Wow' days.

Selection Process at Winterslow Primary School

We are aware that lots of our children are extremely eager to represent the school. Our sports leader is responsible for picking teams and representatives for the school in consultation with the class teacher.

Competition (for example an event with county finals) will be our best team with our strongest players who are chosen to represent the school. When possible, we will also try to take a second team of keen but possibly less able players.

For events or festivals, we will take enthusiastic children for an experience that will promote sport and give them opportunities.

If children play a sport outside of school, we will try our best to let them represent the school in their chosen sport but cannot always guarantee this.

By the end of Year 6 all children will have been given the opportunity to represent the school.

School Games Gold Award Winner for the last five academic years.

Among our sporting activities are:

Swimming

Winterslow school is fortunate to have its own heated outdoor swimming pool. Swimming lessons for the whole school take place during terms 5 and 6. All classes receive swimming lessons from a qualified swimming teacher alongside having additional swimming sessions which aim to improve water confidence in addition to playing water polo and learning about water safety and life saving. Having this wonderful facility really helps us ensure that all our children are able to achieve the government's expectation of all children being able to swim a minimum of 25m unaided.

Hockey

Hockey is a strong feature at Winterslow. It is great to see children be introduced to this sport and go on to enjoy playing it in school. There is a tournament for both upper and lower key stage 2 which is hosted at Salisbury Hockey Club. Over the last 5 years, we have finished 1st or 2nd in the year 5/6 tournament. This has resulted in us representing Salisbury in the county finals. This event showcases a high level of hockey and

enables our children to showcase their talents against the best in the county. We have a good link with Chaffyn Grove school who allow us to train on their all weather pitch in preparation for the tournaments. It is also fantastic that a number of ex-students have gone on to trial or represent England and receive schorlarships for this.

Football

Football is a strong feature at Winterslow. This year our 3 & 4 teams won their district competitions without losing a game. The year 5 & 6 have qualified for the annual county tournament in Devizes.  Lots of children choose to play football during break and lunch times and we have a strong link with Clarendon FC. It has been great to see a real increase in girls taking part in football and this has been reflected on how popular and well our girls team has done.

Mini-marathon

Our pupils perform magnificently in the mini marathon each year at Laverstock. This is a major local competition involving many teams from the Salisbury and district area and each race is contested by several hundred athletes. All of our children show tremendous character and determination in completing a very demanding course each year.Last year our school were awarded numerous medals and achievements by winning in and coming runners up in both the under 9’s and under 11’s competitions, in both the boys' and girls' events.

Tag rugby

Winterslow have consistently reached reached the Years 5 & 6 County tournament in recent years. We are very lucky to have such talented and children and this has shown in competitions results. We also hold strong links with Salisbury Rugby Club and promote this within the school. Tag rugby gives the children a great introduction in to rugby and it is great to see players from school who have gone on to take up rugby outside of school.

Athletics

The Salisbury Area Athletics is a very popular annual event which has a good representation from Winterslow school. Last years June event once again saw eager participation from Winterslow with excellent performances in many areas. We also attend the annual Quad-Kids tournaments for both lower and upper key stage 2. Here our children take part in a host of different athletic events and are able to use fantastic facilities. Through qualifying for this, we have had the opportunity to compete at the Marlborough Games County Final.

Kwik cricket

Well done to our Kwik Cricket teams last year. The girls ended up losing in the County Final by 1 run, which came in the last over. This was an outstanding performance of team work and talent by the team!

The boys also did well at the district event winning a number of games and supporting each other well with the complexities of overarm bowling.

Gymnastics

We are pleased to offer a number of gymnastics events for the children to be apart of. These events introduce children to a number of the disciplines in the sport, give them the opportunity to receive additional coaching and to also compete against other schools in performing a floor and vault routine. We are also proud of our wall bar equipment in our school hall.

Inclusive Sports

We provide our children with the opportunity to try a range of sports. The children can try games like curling, boccia, lacrosse and pentathlon. These are a great addition to our traditional sports played as they give all children the opportunity to try new sports and represent the school in a sporting event.

Orienteering

Each year a team of pupils from Winterslow represent the school in this annual activity. Despite recent years being somewhat challenging due to poor weather conditions, the skills and resolve of the Winterslow team shone out! This is a heavily subscribed event by our children and they love the experiences of taking part in these events in challenging settings. Our school has won and achieved qualification for the county finals for the last few years.

Archery

We are now really pleased to offer taster sessions in Archery supported by an expert Archer!

Change for Life

We run two Change for Life clubs during the term where our children are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle in a fun way.
